Basic ecological literacy; a first cut

This article, first published in the Ecological Society of America's Education Section Newsletter (2:4-5), defines basic ecological literacy according to eleven concepts that all students should master to be considered to be "ecologically literate."

Pedagogical Use Description Students taking an ecology course can read this article at the beginning of the semester to gain an initial understanding of the scope of the field. Alternatively they can read the article at the end of the semester to determine whether they agree with the author's definition of "key ecological concepts." This article should also be useful to education students taking a "teaching science methods" course.
