Nomination Process and Schedule

The Awards Committee is now accepting nominations for the 2013 awards cycle.
The Awards Committee of the Ecological Society of America solicits and encourages nominations from members of the ESA for each of the awards listed below. ESA especially encourages nominations of candidates from traditionally underrepresented groups, including women and minorities.

To be given full consideration, nominations for awards should be completed by December 14th, 2012 (Exceptions: Buell & Braun Awards deadline is March 1st, and Fellows Programs --- see below), and with the exception of the Buell and Braun Awards should be submitted to awards email with the award’s name in the subject line.  Please note the nomination guidelines for each award below:


Buell & Braun Awards

Murray F. Buell Award

Murray F. Buell had a long and distinguished record of service and accomplishment in the Ecological Society of America. Among other things, he ascribed great importance to the participation of students in meetings and to excellence in the presentation of papers. To honor his selfless dedication to the younger generation of ecologists, the Murray F. Buell Award for Excellence in Ecology is given to a student for the outstanding oral paper presented at the ESA Annual Meeting.  The award is presented at the following year’s ESA Annual Meeting.

Recent recipients include Carolyn Kurle, Charles A. Price, Elizabeth M. Wolkovich, Divya Uma, Jennifer M. Talbot, and Kate Boersma.

E. Lucy Braun Award

E. Lucy Braun, an eminent plant ecologist and one of the charter members of the Society, studied and mapped the deciduous forest regions of eastern North America and described them in her classic book, The Deciduous Forests of Eastern North America. To honor her, the E. Lucy Braun Award for Excellence in Ecology is given to a student for the outstanding poster presentation at the ESA Annual Meeting. The award is presented at the following year’s ESA Annual Meeting.

Recent recipients include Daniel Laughlin, Jacquelyn L. Gill, Emily Farrer, Jenise M. Bauman, Joseph E. Fader, and Tony Kovach.

Winners will receive a plaque, $500 cash prize, and travel reimbursement to the 2014 Annual Meeting where they will accept their awards.

Commitment to Human Diversity in Ecology

The Ecological Society of America is seeking nominations for the newly renamed “Commitment to Human Diversity in Ecology” award (formerly the Diversity Award).  The award is in recognition of long-standing contributions of an individual towards increasing the diversity of future ecologists through mentoring, teaching, or outreach.  Beginning in 2013, the award will be presented at the Awards Ceremony during the opening scientific plenary of the ESA Annual Meeting, as well as celebrated at the Diversity Luncheon during the meeting. Nominations should be submitted, including a nominating letter and supporting documentation, by 15 February.

Criteria for Commitment to Human Diversity in Ecology Award:
The award recognizes outstanding contributions in one or more of the following areas:

  • Demonstrated commitment to increasing the diversity of ecology students, professionals, and/or leaders. 
  • Leadership or in the development of diversity-fostering or sustaining programs such as leadership training, research training programs, educational initiatives, travel awards, adult education, distance learning and virtual laboratories, or the development of ecology programs at nature centers, field stations, other non-formal education centers, and education programs for the general public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring new young ecologists at the undergraduate and graduate level, particularly those who are from underrepresented or marginalized groups.
  • Leading by example by overcoming barriers to research, education, or careers in ecology.

Distinguished Service Citation

The Distinguished Service Citation is given to recognize long and distinguished service to the ESA, to the larger scientific community, and to the larger purpose of ecology in the public welfare.

Recent recipients include Margaret Palmer, Frank Egerton, Kay Gross, and Rosina M. Bierbaum, and Donald Strong.

Eminent Ecologist Award

The Eminent Ecologist Award is given to a senior ecologist in recognition of an outstanding body of ecological work or of sustained ecological contributions of extraordinary merit. Nominees may be from any country and need not be ESA members. Recipients receive lifetime active membership in the Society.

Recent recipients include Otto Lange, Michael Rosenzweig, Stephen Hubbell, and Simon A. Levin, and Thomas G. Whitham.

Nominations for this award should include curriculum vitae, a letter of nomination, and no more than 3 additional letters of support.  To be given full consideration, this nomination should be completed by December 15, 2011 and should be submitted as a single PDF file to awards@esa.org with “Eminent Ecologist Award Nomination” in the subject line.

George Mercer Award

The Mercer Award is given for an outstanding ecological research paper published by a younger researcher (the lead author must be 40 years of age or younger at the time of publication). If the award is given for a paper with multiple authors, all authors will receive a plaque, and those 40 years of age or younger at the time of publication will share the monetary prize. The paper must have been published in 2010 or 2011 to be eligible for the 2012 award. Nominees may be from any country and need not be ESA members.

Recent recipients include Jordi Bascompte, Jonathan Chase, Richard Lankau, and Meghan A. Duffy and Spencer R. Hall, and Tracy Langkilde.

Nominations for this award should include the full citation, a copy of the publication (electronic if possible), and a letter of nomination.  To be given full consideration, this nomination should be completed by December 15, 2011 and should be submitted as a single PDF file to awards@esa.org with “George Mercer Award Nomination” in the subject line.

Honorary Member Award

Honorary Membership in the Society is given to a distinguished ecologist who has made exceptional contributions to ecology and whose principal residence and site of ecological research are outside of North America. Up to three awards may be made in any one year until a total of 20 is reached. Nominations of women and minority candidates, as well as those from developing countries, are especially encouraged.

Recent honorees include Carlos Herrera, Erkki Haukioja, Suzanne Milton, and Marilyn Ball, and Marten Scheffer.

Eugene P. Odum Award for Excellence in Ecology Education

The Eugene P. Odum Award for Excellence in Ecology Education recognizes an ecologist for outstanding work in ecology education. This award was generously endowed by, and named for, the distinguished ecologist Eugene P. Odum. Through teaching, outreach, and mentoring activities, recipients of this award have demonstrated their ability to relate basic ecological principles to human affairs. Nominations recognizing achievements in education at the university, K-12, and public levels are all encouraged.

Recent recipients include Carol Brewer, Stuart Fisher, Christine Flanagan, and Kenneth M. Klemow, and John C. Moore.

Robert H. MacArthur Award

The MacArthur Award is given to an established ecologist in mid-career for meritorious contributions to ecology, in the expectation of continued outstanding ecological research and who generally are within 20 years of receiving the PhD. Nominees may be from any country and need not be ESA members. This award is given in alternate years (Please note that the 2012 year is an award year), and the recipient is invited to address the membership at the Annual Meeting following his/her selection.

Recent recipients include May Berenbaum, Alan Hastings, Monica Turner, and Stephen W. Pacala.

Sustainability Science Award

The Sustainability Science Award is given to the authors of a scholarly work that makes the greatest contribution to the emerging science of ecosystem and regional sustainability through the integration of ecological and social sciences. One of the most pressing challenges facing humanity is the sustainability of important ecological, social, and cultural processes in the face of changes in the forces that shape ecosystems and regions.

This ESA award is for a single scholarly contribution (book, book chapter, or peer-reviewed journal article) published in the last 5 years. Nominees need not be ESA members and can be of any age, nationality, or place of residence.

Recent recipients are Terry Yates; F. Stuart Chapin, III; B.L. Turner and authors of the feature on land change science; Martin Lindegren and co-authors of the feature on preventing the collapse of the Baltic cod stock; and Boris Worm and co-authors of the feature on rebuilding global fisheries.

W.S. Cooper Award

The W. S. Cooper Award is given to honor an outstanding contributor to the fields of geobotany and/or physiographic ecology, the fields in which W. S. Cooper worked. This award is for a single contribution in a scientific publication (single or multiple authored). Nominees need not be ESA members and can be of any nationality.

Recent recipients include Paul Fine and coauthors, Campbell Webb and coauthors, Jerry Jenkins and coauthors, Jacquelyn L. Gill and coauthors, and Margaret B. Davis and coauthors.

Nominations for this award should include the full citation, a copy of the publication (electronic if possible), and a letter of nomination.  To be given full consideration, this nomination should be completed by December 15, 2011 and should be submitted as a single PDF file to awards@esa.org with “W.S. ESA Fellows Program

ESA designates as Fellows of the Society certain members who have made outstanding contributions to a wide range of fields served by ESA. Such contributions include, but are not restricted to, those that advance or apply ecological knowledge in academics, government, non-profit organizations and the broader society.

The list of initial Fellows named in the start-up period includes those whose previous levels of recognition place them clearly among the members intended to be recognized by the program.

Nominations of an individual can be made by any three members of ESA (excluding members of the Fellows Selection Committee). A single individual can make at most two nominations each year. Nominations shall include curriculum vitae of at most four pages, one to three letters of recommendation, and a citation of at most 50 words proposed for use if the nominee is selected to be a fellow. ESA particularly welcomes nominations that reflect the breadth of the society in all ways.

ESA designates as Early Career Fellows of the Society certain members (typically chosen within 8 years of receiving the PhD) who have begun making and show promise of continuing to make outstanding contributions to a wide range of fields served by ESA. Such contributions include, but are not restricted to, those that advance or apply ecological knowledge in academics, government, non-profit organizations and the broader society.

Nominations of an individual can be made by any two members of ESA (excluding members of the Fellows Selection Committee). Nominations shall include curriculum vitae of at most four pages, one to three letters of recommendation, and a citation of at most 50 words proposed for use if the nominee is selected to be a fellow.
